DESCRIPTION:Join the National Day of Action: demand that banks stop funding climate chaos. Rally in front of Bank of America on West Boylston Street and march to Chase Bank on Gold Star Boulevard. \nTo avoid climate chaos\, no new fossil fuel projects should be built. But Wall Street banks continue to funnel trillions into fossil financing. The Filthiest Four are Chase\, Citibank\, Wells Fargo\, and Bank of America. If these banks refuse to defund fossil fuels\, we will refuse to do business with them. Support local banks and credit unions instead. \nThis rally is sponsored by 350 Central Massachusetts. All are welcome to join this action to protest planet destroying businesses.

DESCRIPTION:Grassroots Central Mass (GCM) will continue its tradition of celebrating Earth Day with its third “Trees Are Treasures” event on Saturday\, April 22nd from 11 a.m.-4:00 p.m.\, at Wells State Park in Sturbridge. \nTake a family-friendly stroll along the Mill Pond Trail and meet a reformed\, tree-loving logger and the Lady of the Wetlands. Walk through the park and hear a naturalist describe its history from the Ice Age to the building of the stone walls which are ubiquitous in our area. \nEnjoy children’s crafts\, entertainment\, and a tree seedling giveaway under the pavilion. Please check back with us to confirm the details of this celebration of our natural heritage. \nGCM\, a local affiliate of Indivisibles\, is co-sponsoring this year’s event with Brookfields Fight Fear (BFF). Both GCM and BFF are local groups dedicated to serving the communities we live in\, through finding and supporting solutions to issues in our communities\, our state\, and our nation.

SUMMARY:Changing the Mass State Flag and Seal
DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn the history of the Massachusetts flag and seal and hear about the effort to create a new flag and seal which will represent peace\, justice\, equality\, and inclusion for the Commonwealth. \nFor over 40 years\, Indigenous leaders have been calling for the flag and seal of Massachusetts to be changed. To many\, the imagery of a white arm holding a sword over the head of an Indigenous person\, and the Latin motto\, “By the Sword She Seeks Peace\, but Peace with Liberty\,” speaks of a history of violent colonization and conquest.\nOn January 6th\, 2021\, the Massachusetts Legislature established a Special Commission on the Official Seal and Motto of the Commonwealth\, and invited Native leaders from the Wampanoag\, Nipmuc\, and Massachusett nations to sit with state legislators\, historians\, and others to recommend changes to the state symbol. In 2022\, the statewide special commission recommended a total revision of the Massachusetts flag and seal. \nA resolution on June town meeting warrants in West Brookfield\, Brookfield\, and Oakham will ask town voters if they are in support of changing the flag and seal of Massachusetts. SUMMARY:Special Program to Honor Brookfield's First Inhabitants
DESCRIPTION:Brookfield’s longtime resident historian\, the late Robert Wilder (1933-2015) spent decades mapping early Brookfield and other towns of the original Quaboag Plantation. To coincide with celebrations of Brookfield’s 350th anniversary\, Wilder’s friends and collaborators organized this program to remember his legacy and to continue the conversation of how to recognize Brookfield’s Native American story. \nThrough live presentations\, film clips\, maps\, and a display of artifacts\, the program will focus on Brookfield’s past\, present and future through the lens of its first inhabitants\, including the Quaboag and Nipmuc peoples. Featured speakers include Donald Duffy\, Tom Silver Fox Morse\, and Ted Timreck. \nThe presentation is directed by Dan Hamilton\, actor and Emmy winning director who published Wilder’s maps online. \nA reception will follow with books and DVDs available for purchase.
